Zack Attack: Zack Snyder’s top films

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is the unmissable 2021 director’s cut of the 2017 American superhero film Justice League. To celebrate its release we wanted to look back across some of Zack Snyder’s highlights, bringing you some of our favourite Synder specials!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is out now on Digital, 4K UHDTM, Blu-rayTM, DVD and Limited Edition Steelbook.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

This latest addition to the DC Universe follows a determined Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) as he sets out to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain. With the help of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) he recruits Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller), to create a super team, equipped to save the planet from the approaching threat of Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid. Recruitment proves trickier than Bruce imagined, as each of these metahumans must face the skeletons in their closet, before uniting as the Justice League. This four-hour superhero epic is a captivating reimagining of the original Justice League movie. Synder pulls out all the stops, from plot to visuals, it’s a cut above the rest.

Dawn of the Dead

From superheroes to super horrors – Synder’s Dawn of the Dead is a remake of George Romero’s 1978 classic. Following an outbreak of an unexplained plague which has mutated mankind, a handful of human survivors attempt to take refuge from an encroaching zombie holocaust. This remake is arguably even more twisted and terrifying than the original, and Snyder succeeds in establishing a perfect blend of action and horror.

300

This period action film is based on Frank Miller’s 1998 comic series and draws on the events of the deadly Battle of Thermopylae. Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads a troop of painfully outnumbered warriors into battle with the Persian army. Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their enemy. This is a standout Synder special, a vibrant and captivating translation of the graphic novel.

Superman: Man of Steel

Superman: Man of Steel is the first installment in the DC Extended Universe. A reboot of the original film series, this is Superman’s origin story. It follows Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) as he learns of his superpowers and takes on the role of mankind’s protector. Synder captures the reality of the Superman story to present a more complex hero figure. He strips back any artificial aspects surrounding the mythology to expose the character like never before.

Watchmen

This 2009 dark and dystopian superhero film is set in an alternate history during the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. A team of retired superheroes set out to investigate the murder of a fellow hero and uncover much more than initially intended, pushing their morals to the limit. While Synder typically favours visuals above all else, here he excels in his characterization, mastering the individual depiction of each of the Watchmen.
