Since Secret Wars, The Thing and The Human Torch have gone there separate ways; Johnny Storm joined The Inhumans while Ben Grimm travelled the cosmos with the Guardians of the Galaxy. But Dr Doom is going to change all of that as he sets the two on a journey that will possibly bring back Reed and Sue, reuniting the Fantastic Four! But can Ben and Johnny power through their differences to work together?
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Marvel’s first family together and I can’t help but feel that they’ve left a huge heart shaped hole in the Marvel comics universe – but Zdarsky is hopefully about to change that! Ever since the Thing and the Human Torch were teased in Marvel Legacy #1, I couldn’t help but let out a little squee in delight. I was a bit hesitant when Marvel announced the limited run of this story, but thankfully the first issue more than delivered, and boy did it hit me with the feels! The book is very heartfelt and tackles the hurt that Johnny and Ben are still feeling when it comes to the loss of Reed, Sue and the kids. I even felt a little emotional seeing the flashback panels of the family back in the good old days! There’s also some humour thrown in the mix for good measure, as Ben quotes a famous Pokemon line to Dr Doom!
There’s definitely a lot of setting up to do in this issue though, and the pacing of this issue is at break neck speed, when I got to
the final panels I really didn’t want it to end! There’s some very interesting revelations in the issue that are set to shock some longtime readers, but I think that’s just the start of things to come!
The art in this issue was just sublime; the team captured the details and emotions for both The Thing and The Human Torch so well and the panels featuring Johnny in flames was glorious to see. Dr Doom was also a standout in the issue, with his bursts of green energy proving a real standout. The flashback panels featuring the classic Fantastic Four were a delight to see and I loved the use of the faded tones.
Marvel Two-in-one #1 is a fantastic opening that hopefully marks the return of everyone’s favourite Marvel family. I honestly can’t wait to see the upcoming adventures that Zdarsky is going to take Ben and Johnny on, as well as seeing what Dr Doom’s ulterior plan for helping his previous enemies really is!
