As teased yesterday, Warner Bros. has finally released the first official trailer for the upcoming Joker origins film starring Joaquin Phoenix – and it looks equal parts terrifying and heart breaking!
The film is set to chronicle Arthur Fleck’s (Phoenix) tragic descent into madness, eventually becoming one of Batman’s most feared nemesis. The trailer is a lot different to what I was expecting though, as it looks like director Todd Phillips will be exploring themes of mental illness and what effect a broken society can have on an individual.
Judging by the footage, it looks like Phillips will be taking inspiration from Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke” graphic novel, as we see Arthur writing notes for stand-up comedy. I absolutely love the aesthetics of the footage though, especially with Jimmy Durante’s version of the song “Smile” – how amazing does Phoenix look in the suit and joker make up too!
Check out the trailer below!
Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix, alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham, Brett Cullen, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais.

The film is set for release beginning 2 October 2019, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
