Superman director James Gunn teases “electric” Lois and Clark chemistry

Clark Kent and Lois Lane are undeniably one of the most iconic couples in comic book history, so with a new iteration of the DC franchise hitting cinemas in 2025, the spotlight is certainly on the leading pair.

Following in the footsteps of the excellent Henry Cavill and the often underutilised Amy Adams is David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, who saw off competition from the likes of Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, Phoebe Dynevo and Emma Mackey to clinch the two leading roles.

Following the release of the trailer – which gave us our first glimpse of the pair in multiple environments and scenarios – it’s clear to see that there’s a fantastic spark between the duo.

In a recent Q&A with writer and director James Gunn, the new Co-Chairman and CEO of DC shed a light on what fans can expect from Corenswet and Brosnahan’s dynamic.

“When we brought them together there was an electricity in the room that was palpable – and part of it is the steaminess and sexiness of it – but part of it’s just the way they bounce off each other in the way that 40s movies stars do, you know, like Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night’”

“So it’s like this really miraculous energy between the two of them and I felt like we were casting actors but we were also casting the energy between these two.”

When elaborating on the Lois and Clark relationship, the director said: “In the more loving aspects you go, oh these guys like each other in a real way, it’s hot! But also when they’re together you go okay I get it, he’s the Man of Steel, he’s one of these most powerful men in the world (perhaps), but man – she’s also a force to be reckoned with.”

“You can see there’s a way in which she can mow him down and so there’s this back and forth between the two of them where they’re both so powerful and you see what they give each other as a couple and you feel that chemistry.”

“The fact that Lois is as good at journalism as Superman is at protecting the world is an important part of the film.”

With the new trailer teasing a sweet dynamic between the colleagues at the Daily Planet, along with a loving and even, dare we say, steamy dynamic out of the work place, it certaily looks like their relationship will prove the heart of the film, reminiscent of the CW’s Superman & Lois.

Directed by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabemla Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell.

Superman will be released in the UK on July 11th 2025.
