Gwendoline Christie has confirmed Captain Phasma will be returning in the next Star Wars instalment while talking to People at yesterdays SAG awards.
Considering how much the character was used in the marketing and merchandise, yet didn’t really have a huge role in the film, is exciting as I really would like to see more Phasma! The last we saw of her in Star Wars: The Force Awakens Han Solo asks Finn if there is a trash chute or compactor they can throw her down, so it’ll be interesting to see how she gets out of that one!
“I will be in the next Star Wars movie. I think that’s an exclusive, actually,” Christie told PEOPLE Deputy Editor JD Heyman on Saturday’s pre-show red carpet. “I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time.”
Christie also went on to talk about how the part was originally supposed to be cast as a male. “I thought the costume was incredibly striking. I also just liked this notion of a female stormtrooper,” Christie said. “I felt it encouraged diversity and it was doing something new and it was an interesting bit of casting for women, and I hope that in something that was such a mainstream success it would breed more of those kind of opportunities for other women.”
“I was struck by how incredible it looked, but also I liked that it was stormtrooper armor,” Christie said at the time. “It hadn’t been sexualized or feminized in any way. I thought, ‘That is interesting. That’s very modern.'”
