‘Sonic’ smashes box office record for game adaptation with $58M opening!

Paramount Pictures, in partnership with SEGA, is set to do well from the first big-screen outing for the little blue hedgehog, as the film is set to race past the $60 million mark (with $68M prediction) over the course of the 4-day weekend.

This smashes the record for a video game movie’s debut opening weekend, overtaking last year’s Detective Pikachu at $54.3 million, marking an amazing end to the team’s journey following that famous delay due to Sonic’s redesign.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, got a boost from the US holiday weekend with a further $19 million over the four day frame, dropping to #2 48% on its second full week on release. Internationally, it took in $23 million in its sophomore outing for a foreign tally of $83.6 million.

After Sonic the Hedgehog, the weekend’s other big film was Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, which benefited from its top Oscar wins by grossing a huge $5.5 million for the three days.
