Scottish star Ewan McGregor is joining the cast of Warner Bros’ and DC’s upcoming film Birds of Prey as Batman villain Black Mask!
According to Deadline, the Star Wars actor will be joining Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary, Rosie Perez;s Renee Montoya and Margot Robbie who will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn.
Black Mask was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake and first appeared in Batman issue #386 in August 1985. The character, originally known as Roman Sionis, is a crime boss who controls an organisation of criminals known as the False Face Society. Funnily enough Roman was born into a wealthy Gotham City family like Bruce Wayne, his parents were in the same social circle as Thomas and Martha Wayne. Roman inherited a part of his family’s business, Janus Cosmetics, but rushed ahead a new cosmetic product without testing, which in turn disfigured a number of women. This left his business in ruins and had to be bailed out by Wayne Enterprises. Disgraced and embarrassed, Roman visited his parent’s crypt and started smashing his father’s coffin, eventually carving a black mask from the ebony casket lid – becoming the Black Mask. He became a long running villain predominantly in the Batman comic book in the 1980s and ’90s.
