Director James Gunn discusses “beautiful” new Superman score

With both the motion poster and the new trailer giving fans a first glimpse at the highly anticipated soundtrack from the upcoming Superman instalment, it also confirms that a certain beloved score has been re-worked in a unique way.

The iconic John Williams score is synomous with the DC superhero and is certainly one of the most treasured elements of the franchise.

But with director James Gunn at the helm, many wondered whether he would bring his signature use of music to the film, a là Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, with curated playlists and unique needle drops.

However, in a recent Q&A with writer and director James Gunn, the new Co-Chairman and CEO of DC has confirmed that the upcoming Superman flick will be a score-based movie unlike his previous films and TV shows.

“When I first talked to John Murphy, who’s our composer, I said listen, I want you to do something completely out there. This is a score based movie – it is not a song based movie like the other movies have been.”

“We’ve been working on the score as hard as we’ve been working on the movie, and started long before the screenplay was even finished.”

“The Williams score is maybe my favorite score of all time, with the exception of a couple of other scores, but it’s one of the greatest scores of all time. It’s the thing I loved when I saw the movies as a child so that was the thing I wanted to pay tribute to.”

He also shed a light on what fans can expect from the James Murphy score: “I always wanted at least part of John Williams’ theme in there but sometimes it’s hard to say to composers to rework somebody else’s music but John Murphy just took to the challenge 100% and made something really beautiful.”

“He’s done something miraculous and I think again it’s a mix of the new and the traditional in a way that we haven’t quite seen before but also I think it’s soul food.”

Following the exciting clip of the re-worked theme in the trailer, we can’t wait to hear more from the official score!

Directed by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell.

Superman will be released in the UK on July 11th 2025
