Marvel’s Daredevil was one of this years best shows on Netflix; with a slow burn build up to revealing Kingpin, great character development and one of the best fight scenes, anticipation for the second series is pretty high!
So it’s surprising to find out season 2 is shaking things up with more romance, faster pacing and upping the morally complex storytelling by introducing the controversial antihero Frank Castle, a.k.a The Punisher. Check out Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) as The Punisher below…
As comic book fans will know, Frank Castle is an ex-Special Forces soldier, but following the death of his wife and two children during a mob shoot out, Castle turns to brutal vigilantism. The Punisher wants to clean up the streets of New York, much like Daredevil’s ethos, but instead of using martial arts he uses weapons. This brutal nature and willingness to kill makes him a very divisive character as, on the whole, Marvel and D.C superheroes will try and avoid using a gun. This is a pretty strong topic in America at the moment, so we can expect some big moral conflicts between Daredevil and The Punisher.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Daredevil showrunner Doug Petrie comments on their portrayal of the divisive antihero, “viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves. Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
Showrunner Marco Ramirez also added the team based the character aroundTaxi Driver’s famous malcontent Travis Bickle. “He has a different moral code,” he says. “Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devotee anything on TV. Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water.”
Daredevil will return in 2016 with Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Rasario Dawson and Scott Glenn all reprising their roles. In addition to Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Elodie Yung will star as Matt’s old college girlfriend Elektra.
