First announced by DC back in 2014 – and subsequently confirmed by Dwayne Johnson – it’s certainly been a long road to the big screen for Black Adam. But following numerous production and development shuffles, the much anticipated 11th instalment is almost upon us.
Almost a decade later, Johnson finally brings the titular comic book villain – who’s more of an anti-hero in this instalment – to the DCEU, and he’s joined by four brand new heroes known as the Justice Society Of America (JSA), who also make their first live-action debut on the big screen.
To celebrate the upcoming release of Black Adam, I sat down with producers Hiram Garcia & Beau to discuss what it was like working with Dwayne Johnson on this film, especially following on from action-adventure flick Jungle Cruise.
Nicola Austin: What was it like working with such a passionate actor as Dwayne Johnson, who really is perfect in this role?
Hiram Garcia: Look I’ve had the privilege of knowing Dwayne since I was a teenage and Beau and I have made too many movies with him! When you’ve done that much with a megastar like DJ and then you watch him completely up his game to a whole other level, it’s so inspiring for you, the entire crew and the cast.
And everyone knew this was something he took so seriously, he took two years to transform his body, he played a version of a character that we hadn’t seen before and he played a character that we’d seen him perform on screen like before. Like Black Adam is so unique and distinct and different from anything we’ve seen DJ play, so.
He attacked that movie every day with a tenacity and a fire of like, this is the dream. He was working so hard to bring it to life, and he inspired us all to up our game and I think it really shows in the film that we were able to make something that we were able to say we were really proud of.
Beau Flynn: Can the three of us start a spin off sister company called We Have a Black Adam?!
Hiram Garcia: Yeah first of all – great name, We Have a Hulk. It’s really fun!
