The Flash S4E13 ‘True Colours’ Review

Spoilers Ahead!

Amunet Black is taken down to the secret cells where Barry is locked up with other metas, who happen to all be from that bus. She greedily decides to take them all and an exchange is arranged for the next night. Iris and Cecile go to visit Barry but are met by Warden Wolfe instead, who tells them Barry isn’t allowed visitors due to being involved in a yard fight. Now isn’t it a lucky coincidence that Cecile found herself possessing the ability to read minds last week! She soon realises that the Warden is fibbing and Barry’s true whereabouts.

Back at Star Labs they frantically try to work out how to save Barry in time. In walks Ralph on a rant after bumping into an old friend. Everyone else looks on in astonishment as Ralph begins to morph into the person he is talking about – a new ability is discovered which comes in very handy for the team, and Barry especially! Ralph tries to double cross Amunet by morphing into Wolfe but he soon gives it away and their plan of saving Barry is foiled. It might not have worked, but once again Hartley Sawyer gives us fantastic comedic moments as Ralph during these scenes.

Luckily, Barry isn’t just sitting around and manages to break himself and the other metas out of their cells. They almost make it out but Wolfe and Amunet catch up to them. However, another twist sees Clifford DeVoe show up, take all the meta’s powers before killing them and Wolfe the Warden. He spares Becky (not so sure that’s the kind of luck she’s used to) and uses her body as his new vessel. Cisco and Killer Frost vibe to Barry just after all the excitement is over, but he refuses to go with them as he doesn’t want to leave prison unless he’s lawfully freed. Oh Barry, you’re such a good human!

Cecile and Iris appear in court with an appeal for Barry’s case. It’s not going well at all until Clifford DeVoe enters the courtroom. Marlize and the judge are just as surprised as I was as a viewer. That is until I realised Ralph had used his new ability and has morphed into Clifford. The judge has no choice but to drop the charges and free Barry, and he is reunited with his family and friends.

I feel like I can’t praise this show enough at the moment and all I can say each week is that it was another fantastic episode. Have to point out one of my highlights was Cisco comparing Ralph to the freaky painting from IT when he’s mid-morph. In True Colors we had twists and turns and more of DeVoe’s plans became clear. It was also very interesting to see tensions rising between Clifford and Marlize to the point where he has to drug her in order to conform. Barry’s realisation at the end that he has plans for each of the meta’s from the bus has huge implications for Ralph, and I’m scared that something horrific is going to happen to him.
