With the current Doctor Peter Capaldi set to leave the show this year following three years in the role, the internet has been full of rumors of who will take up the sonic screwdriver next. Bookies favourites seems to change each week, with the Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall as the latest actor tipped to play the role.
Other names that keep popping up among possible lists include Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), Ben Whishaw (James Bond) but most interestingly Olivia Coleman (Broadchurch), Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange) and fan favourite Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter).
While speaking at the Captain America panel during the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in London this weekend (27th & 28th May), the Agent Carter star opened up about whether she’d like to take on the role:
“I don’t want to play it. No. It’s just not my thing, but I really respect it. I’m a big fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, though. She plays the lead in Fleabag. There were talks of her being the next Doctor, and she’s so funny and eccentric and unique; she’d be great. I can’t really see anyone other than her playing it.”
Agent Carter Series Three
Atwell was also asked whether Agent Carter series 3 could still happen and what she would have liked to have explored in that series. As we found out more about Peggy’s late brother in series 2, Atwell definitely indicated that the exploration of how this affected her was going to setup a larger arc. She also commented that she would have liked her relationship with Jarvis explored more as she believed this was one of the more interesting aspects of the show.
Atwell also discussed the rise of kick ass female-superhero shows and how the audience is to thank for this, as over the past 5-10 years there’s been so much more demand and a growing audience for shows such as Agent Carter.
Continued support and a huge fan-base for the show indicates that there’s still interest in the character and series, as she’s reprised the role in upcoming animated series Secret Wars.
Atwell noted that an animated relaunch of the show is a possibility; she was very surprised when ABS cancelled the series, but stated if the need was strong enough, she’d definitely re-visit the role!
